Tuesday, officials in Milwaukee charged LaFave with felony murder in the Oct. 1 homicide of 31-year-old Haroon Khan, who was reported missing that day when he didn’t show up for a family dinner in Mequon. According to the complaint, Zoellick killed Khan so he could steal his car.

According to the complaint, LaFave had chance after chance to prevent the murder, but felt helpless to stop Zoellick.

“She felt that if she didn’t participate that Travis Zoellick might leave her,” the complaint says.

Zoellick, police say, was obsessed with obtaining a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and on Oct. 1 he told LaFave he had located one for sale in Milwaukee.

Khan's family last saw him at his parents' home in Mequon around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, when he left to go to his house on Oakland Ave. in Milwaukee to show his car to possible buyers - people he had never met before, Zaidi said.

He had earlier placed an ad to sell his 2006 silver Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Khan was supposed to come back to his parents' house by 7:30 or 8 p.m. to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

When Khan never showed up for dinner, several family members and friends tried to call him. When he didn't pick up, they went to his house on Oakland. They found the lights on, the door open and his wallet still inside. The car was gone. That's when they reported him missing.

Homestead High graduate

Khan's family said he grew up in Mequon and graduated from Homestead High School in 1995. After high school, he ran his own business - a gas station in Wauwatosa. He had returned to school in recent years to earn his degree and hoped to eventually enter the UW-Milwaukee School of Business, said Zaidi.

He came from a tight-knit, Muslim family, with many members practicing medicine in the area and being active in the community. His parents, Muhammad and Shahnaz, immigrated to the United States from Pakistan nearly four decades ago and put down roots in Mequon.

Muhammad Khan was president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee for many years. He works as a surgeon at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. Haroon Khan's brother Gouhar, 33, is an obstetrician, and his brother-in-law is a cardiologist.

Khan was boisterous and big-hearted, Zaidi said.
